The neighbors in the Dodge County Township of Shields, just northwest of Watertown, WI found themselves embroiled in a tragedy that evolved into a controversy after a massive fire at a tire recycling facility.  Local residents had tried for years to urge officials to bring the company into compliance.

On April 15, 2013, two homemade bombs detonated 12 seconds and 210 yards (190 m) apart at 2:49 p.m., near the finish line of the annual Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring several hundred others, including 16 who lost limbs.[2][5][10]

On April 18 the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released images of two suspects,[11][12][13] who were later identified as Kyrgyz-American brothers Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The brothers killed an MIT policeman, kidnapped a man in his car, and had a shootout with the police in nearby Watertown, during which two officers were severely injured, one of whom died a year later. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot several times, and his brother ran him over while escaping in the stolen car; Tamerlan died soon after.

An unprecedented manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ensued on April 19, with thousands of law enforcement officers searching a 20-block area of Watertown;[14] residents of Watertown and surrounding communities were asked to stay indoors, and the transportation system and most businesses and public places closed.[15][16] Around 6:00 p.m., a Watertown resident discovered Dzhokhar hiding in a boat in his backyard.[17] He was shot and wounded by police before being taken into custody.[18]

Plot

Edward Jessup is an abnormal psychologist who, while studying schizophrenia, begins to think that "our other states of consciousness are as real as our waking states."[2] Jessup begins experimenting with sensory deprivation using a flotation tank, aided by two like-minded researchers, Parrish and Rosenberg. At a faculty party he meets fellow "whiz kid" and biological anthropologist Emily, and the two eventually marry.
The film skips ahead seven years. Eddie and Emily have two daughters, are on the brink of divorce, and reunite with the couple who first introduced them. When Edward hears of a Mexican tribe that experiences shared illusion states, he travels to Mexico to participate in what is apparently an Ayahuasca Ceremony. During the walk into the bush his guide states that the indigenous tribe they are meeting works with Amanita muscaria which they are collecting for next year's ceremonies. The tribe refer to one of the ingredients of the mixture they use as "First Flower." An indigenous elder is seen with Banisteriopsis caapi root in his hand prior to cutting Jessup's hand, adding blood to the mixture he is preparing. Immediately after consuming the mixture, Edward experiences bizarre, intense hallucinations. He returns to the U.S. with a tincture and continues taking it to trigger his ability to experience altered states of consciousness.


When toxic concentrations of the substance make increased dosage dangerous, Jessup returns to sensory deprivation, believing it will enhance the effects of the substance at his current dose.

Repairing a disused tank in a medical school, Jessup uses it to experience a series of increasingly drastic visions, including one of early hominids.

Jessup insists that his visions have "externalized".
Emerging from the tank, his mouth bloody, frantically writing notes because he is unable to speak, Jessup insists on his being x-rayed before he "reconstitutes." A radiologist inspecting Jessup's X-rays says that they belong to a gorilla.

In later experiments, Jessup experiences actual, physical biological devolution. At one stage he emerges from the isolation tank as a feral and curiously small-statured, light-skinned Primitive Man, going on a rampage before returning to his natural form. Despite the concern of colleagues, Jessup stubbornly continues.


In the ultimate experiment, Edward experiences a more profound regression, transforming into an amorphous mass of conscious, primordial matter.

An energy wave released from the experiment stuns Jessup's colleagues, and destroys Jessup's tank. Emily arrives to find a swirling maelstrom where the tank had been.

Emily searches the vortex for Jessup, finding him as he is on the brink of

becoming a non-physical form of proto-consciousness and
 possibly disappearing from our version of reality altogether.

 His friends bring Edward home,

hoping that the transformations will end

 Watched over by Emily, Jessup begins to regress again, the transformations no longer requiring intake of "first flower" or sensory deprivation. Urging Jessup to fight the change, Emily grabs his hand, immediately being enveloped by the primordial energy emanating from Jessup. The sight of Jessup's wife, apparently being consumed by the energy, stirs the human consciousness in Jessup's devolving form. He fights the transformation and returns to his human form. In the final scene, Jessup embraces Emily, and his love returns her to normal.

     'Poor things," wrote the Nobel-winning physicist Erwin Schrödinger of the many women he had had as lovers: "They have provided for my life's happiness and their own distress. Such is life."

    He was one of the 20th Century's great scientists, an influential philosopher, and a man with an unusual, even remarkable, private life. But what's Schrödinger doing in a theatre column?

    The answer stretches back to Eamon de Valera, who brought Schrödinger to Ireland in 1939. The playwright Arthur Riordan has drawn inspiration from Schrödinger's stay here for a wickedly fantastical musical about wartime Dublin, Improbable Frequency.
    Improbable Frequency first aired in 2004 and is to be revived at the Gaiety, from March 13 to 24, as part of the Dublin City of Science festival. It is witty, utterly original, and is almost entirely divorced from historical fact.

    But the true story of Schrödinger in Ireland, recounted in Walter Moore's biography of the scientist, is a drama in itself -- and De Valera plays a crucial role. De Valera's first love was mathematics and, as Taoiseach, he determined to set up a world-class institute in Dublin for theoretical physics. Schrödinger had won the Nobel prize, and De Valera invited him to head it.

    Schrödinger was working at a university in his native Austria at the time. But he had been outspoken in his criticism of the Nazis, and was suddenly fired, for "political unreliability". He fled Austria with his wife Anny, taking the train to Rome with barely any luggage so as not to attract attention -- he even left his gold Nobel medal behind. In Rome, fearing the post would be checked, he went to the Vatican to send letters seeking help.

    De Valera was in Geneva as president of the League of Nations assembly. Schrödinger wrote to him and soon received a call summoning him to the Irish Embassy in Rome. There, he took a call from Dev, who told him to come to Geneva.
    The Irish consul in Rome gave Schrödinger and his wife a pound each, tickets to Geneva, and visas for every country they might need to pass through en route to Ireland. Before the Italian border, they were taken off the train and questioned at length, but eventually they were cleared to proceed. They met Dev, and stayed with him, before going to Ireland.
    But Schrödinger's visa requirements were somewhat unconventional: he lived with his wife and another woman, Hilde, with whom he had a daughter. This unconventional arrangement had previously caused difficulties for him at Oxford and Princeton, but it posed no problem for Dev, who told Schrödinger to write to him directly about the extra visas.
    The appointment was a success. Schrödinger brought international prestige to Dev's new Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. Time Magazine covered a series of lectures he gave in 1943 titled 'What is Life?' to which De Valera took the entire cabinet.

    Snow's position can be summed up by an often-repeated part of the essay:
    A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Once or twice I have been provoked and have asked the company how many of them could describe the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The response was cold: it was also negative. Yet I was asking something which is the scientific equivalent of: Have you read a work of Shakespeare’s?[5]
    I now believe that if I had asked an even simpler question — such as, What do you mean by mass, or acceleration, which is the scientific equivalent of saying, Can you read? — not more than one in ten of the highly educated would have felt that I was speaking the same language. So the great edifice of modern physics goes up, and the majority of the cleverest people in the western world have about as much insight into it as their neolithic ancestors would have had.[5]
